42nd Classical Guitar Competition
Always under the Maestro Alirio Diaz’ Honorary Presidence the 42nd edition of this estimated competition (one of the oldest contests devoted to the guitar in the world) will recall to Alessandria the best of the guitar.
Alessandria is a little city of North West Italy, used to the guitar since when Michele Pittaluga and Alirio Diaz promoted the first edition of the Guitar competition in 1968.
Since then, most of the classical guitarists in favour and playing at this time passed by here, like Yamashita, Grondona, Krivokapic, Dylla, Tamayo, Papandreou, Sala , Zanon, Micheli and many others.
In 2009 the Jury members invited are Alberto Ponce from France, Jukka Savijoki from Finland, Marcin Dylla from Poland, Antigoni Goni from Greece, Turibio Santos from Brazil and from Italy Elena Zaniboni and Micaela Pittaluga.
The 42nd edition is devoted to the work of Antonio Lauro, great composer from Venezuela: the compulsory pieces in the Eliminatory round and Semifinals are well-known works like “Seis por derecho” and “Suite Venezuelana”
As the Final round of the competition is a “Concerto with orchestra”, the candidates can choose between the Heitor Villa Lobos’ (Concerto para guitarra y orquesta) , Joaquin Rodrigo’ (Fantasia para un gentilhombre) and Antonio Lauro’ (concerto n1) orchestral works.
The first Lauro’s concerto will be performed by Flavio Sala also in the opening day (21st September ) at the Conservatorio of Alessandria, and the second Lauro’s Concerto (inedited) will be performed last night (26th September) during the Finals of the competition at the Theatre of Alessandria.
Our guests will be Natalia Lauro (daughter of Maestro Lauro), Count Peter Hamilton MacDomhnaill, President of the Caroni Music, a delegation from “Alirio Diaz Foundation” from Carora (Venezuela) and many others.

The prizes are very interesting: a total cash prize amount of 31000 euro, with a first prize in cash of 8500 euro plus a contract valued 4500€ for an audio CD to record in Canada with Naxos rec. To add a concert tour in Italy and other countries with about 30 dates.
Many other prizes to give and facilities for all are the value added for the young guitar players coming to Alessandria from everywhere ............
